Car Wash Grit Pit Cleanout

Carwash brushYou’ve probably never heard of a “grit pit.” Unless you own a car wash, that is. The sand, grit and sludge that collect after washing a car will clog sewer pipes (and is certainly not good for septic systems either!) What’s more, there are petroleum byproducts and soap residues in it that are considered solid waste and are potentially hazardous to the environment.

This wastewater from car washes must be filtered in a grit pit so that the heavy sand, solids, and contaminants sink to the bottom. The business owner must clean out the pit and dispose of the sludge properly, or hire car wash grit pit cleanout service to pump out the sludge and haul it away to a wastewater treatment facility.

Options are limited. Even if the sand and sludge were not a problem for sewers, commercial businesses cannot simply dump potentially hazardous materials down the drain. In New Hampshire, car wash grit pits are required by law and regulated by local sewer departments.  Some towns will allow owners to clean out their own grit pit, dry the sand on-site, and then dispose of it on legally approved sites. Dumping grit pit sand illegally would open the business up to liability, fines, and cleanup fees from a state-approved environmental remediation company.

Why go through all that trouble yourself? Let Maznek Septic Services do the heavy lifting for you! We are licensed by the state of New Hampshire for hauling grit pit sand to designated facilities. Since the business owner is responsible for proper disposal of grit pit waste, we provide our car wash clients with site disposal documentation.

As part of our Car Wash Grit Pit Cleanout services, we will determine a pumping schedule based on the size of your system and operation – and adjust it as needed. For example, more frequent grit pit pumping is usually needed during the winter in New Hampshire, due to road sanding and an increase in customers who would normally wash their cars at home.

With Maznek Septic, you’ll never need to worry about having to clean out your grit pit again – leaving you more time to work on your business! Call us today for a free consultation!
