Got questions about your septic system? We’ve compiled answers to the most common homeowner concerns — from pumping schedules to leach field health — so you can keep your system running safely and efficiently.

Septic System Lifespan

How long does a septic system last?

A leach field can last up to 30 years with proper use and maintenance. Concrete tanks may last 50 years, while PVC tanks and sewer lines can last indefinitely.

Additives and Chemicals

Should I be adding bacteria to my septic tank?

No. Natural waste introduces all the bacteria your system needs. Use antibacterial soaps and bleach in moderation to avoid killing beneficial bacteria.

Lawn & Leach Field Issues

No grass will grow on my leach field. Why is this?

This may indicate backup or poor function, chemical saturation, lack of aerobic bacteria, or insufficient topsoil causing the lawn to dry out.

Pumping and Maintenance

What areas do you pump?

How often should a septic tank be pumped out?

On average, a four-bedroom home with a 1,500-gallon tank should be pumped every 2–3 years. A more accurate guide is measuring the graywater-to-solids ratio during service.

Household Waste & Disposal

Can I flush biodegradable baby wipes down the toilet?

No. Even “biodegradable” wipes clog baffles, cause backups, and release antibacterial chemicals that harm septic bacteria.

Locating Your Septic System

I don’t know where my septic tank is.

Maznek Septic uses locating equipment to map your tank and leach field. After pumping, we’ll document the location, recommend a schedule, and send reminders for your next service.

Can I use a garbage disposal with a septic system?

It’s not recommended. Food scraps increase solids and grease buildup, leading to frequent pumping and possible leach field damage.
